Denver fracking foes to deliver petitions seeking citywide ban:

Environmental activist groups that want to ban hydraulic fracturing in Denver said they planned to deliver nearly 2,000 written and photographic petitions to Mayor Michael Hancock’s office and city council members Wednesday.

The groups launched the Don’t Frack Denver campaign in February, a move that drew a strong response from Vital for Colorado, a coalition of more than 35,000 Coloradans, businesses, civic leaders and trade organizations that support the oil and gas industry.

Peter Moore, a Denver attorney and Vital’s board chairman, in February noted that fracking has been done in Colorado for decades, and added that “extreme environmentalists are declaring war on Denver’s economy and thousands of Coloradans are ready for the fight.”

Groups backing the Denver fracking ban include Greenpeace, Colorado Progressive Coalition, Food & Water Watch, 350 Denver, and Denver Metro Network of the Sierra Club. They planned to meet on the steps of the City & County Building about noon Wednesday to deliver the petitions, according to their announcement.

Don’t Frack Denver said its member groups want the Denver city council to impose a moratorium on fracking, and also take steps to ensure no fracking will take place in the South Park area southwest of Denver because the South Platte River flows through that area.

A Larimer County district court judge in August 2014 struck down Fort Collins' five-year moratorium on fracking within that city, ruling that a local, multi-year moratorium is the same as a ban and bans violate the state’s authority to oversee the energy industry.
