Holiday sales are expected to increase 4.1 percent nationwide this year as Colorado retailers prepare for the wave of customers over the Thanksgiving weekend.
Retailers across the country anticipate up to 30 percent of their sales coming in November and December alone.
That's according to a survey released Wednesday by the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce's Colorado Retail Council, which also found that six in 10 people — 140 million shoppers nationwide — plan to shop sometime between Thursday and Sunday.
"Customers have come to expect and anticipate great deals offered by retailers, many incorporating Thanksgiving Day into their deal-grabbing strategies," said the Chamber's Director of Government Affairs Charlie Sheffield.
About 25 percent of consumers say they will shop on Thanksgiving Day, with retailers reporting on the survey that they depend on the holiday weekend shoppers to drive annual sales and their bottom lines.
"Thanksgiving holiday shopping is when customers generally make the purchases they've been considering for some time, knowing that the best deals are usually offered this time of year," Sheffield said. "Retailers are accounting for this and plan major deals to help their customers cash in on this 'wait-and-see' strategy."
Popular items include Apple devices and electronics, gift cards and toys centered on movies like "Frozen," "Transformers," and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," the survey showed.
The annual survey, which had similar results to those in 2013, is conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytic, a business research company.
